Indianapolis Colts vs San Francisco 49ers Match Player Stats (Dec 22, 2025)

NFL Week 16 · Monday Night Football · Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis

Brock Purdy walked out of Lucas Oil Stadium having thrown more touchdown passes in one game than he had across his five previous Monday Night Football appearances combined. Five touchdowns against eleven interceptions entering the night — then five in a single outing, to four different receivers, against a Colts secondary that had no answer for any of them.

The San Francisco 49ers won 48-27 in Indianapolis, with Purdy going 25-of-34 for 295 yards and a career-high five scores. It was the first time a 49ers quarterback threw five or more touchdown passes in any regular-season or playoff game since Steve Young threw six in Super Bowl XXIX, thirty years earlier. Christian McCaffrey ran 21 times for 117 yards and crossed 1,000 rushing yards for the season. San Francisco produced 440 total yards and did not punt for the second consecutive week.

Philip Rivers, 44 years old and playing in his second game since returning from a five-year retirement, gave Indianapolis a real first half — 277 yards, two touchdown strikes to Alec Pierce, and a tie at 14 heading into the second quarter. The Colts could not hold it. San Francisco linebacker Dee Winters intercepted Rivers’ final pass and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown with 3:26 remaining, sealing the margin at 48-27 and dropping Indianapolis to 8-7 with five consecutive losses.

Records and Milestones

Purdy’s five-touchdown night was a career high and the most by a San Francisco quarterback in any regular-season or playoff game since Steve Young threw six against the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX in January 1995. Across the previous week’s game and this one, Purdy threw seven touchdown passes — the highest two-game total by a 49ers quarterback since 2001. He also became the first San Francisco signal-caller to throw five touchdowns on a Monday Night Football broadcast.

McCaffrey’s 117 rushing yards pushed him past 1,000 yards on the ground for the 2025 season, doing so against a Colts defense that entered the night ranked tied for second in yards per carry allowed (3.8). Jonathan Taylor’s fourth-quarter touchdown run gave him 17 rushing touchdowns for the season, the second-highest single-season total in Colts history — behind only Hall of Famer Lenny Moore’s franchise record and breaking a tie that had stood with Moore heading into the night.

San Francisco scored in 23 consecutive quarters, the franchise’s longest such run since 1995. The victory also snapped a five-game losing streak the 49ers had built against Indianapolis in the all-time series, a stretch dating to November 2001 — the same month former Colts head coach Jim Mora delivered his “playoffs?!” press conference.

Indy’s defeat simultaneously clinched postseason berths for the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC.

Indianapolis started without both of its first-team offensive tackles and lost its starting center three plays into the first drive.

The 49ers finished December 22 at 11-4 and riding five straight wins, with McCaffrey at 1,000 rushing yards and Purdy, despite an uneven Monday Night Football track record through most of the season, having produced the most complete passing performance of his career. Kittle’s ankle — he left having caught seven passes for 115 yards and a score — was the notable concern on the plane back to San Francisco.

The Colts’ loss did more damage than their own record. It clinched postseason spots for Buffalo, Jacksonville, and the Chargers in the AFC — teams that advanced to the playoffs without playing a snap that night. Indianapolis, which had gone 8-2 through the first ten weeks of the season and sat in the thick of conference title conversations, was now 8-7 with five consecutive losses and nowhere left to go. A franchise that had looked like a contender in November went home for Christmas on the outside of the bracket.
